The winner for this first Cannonballrun was Dublin Ghost Tale with their eerie 16A Capel St. The team consisted of Ella Burke (Media artist) and Meabh Redmond (Video artist) are work together as part of the Dublin based collaboration DeySed who are producing film based works as responses to our city at night. They set out to provide a surreal take on what happens in Dublin. With the added skills of Niamh Redmond and Elaine McCague they hoped to explore the idea of making a film in 24 hours by having a experimental and creative approach and trying to subvert the rules that go along with art-house films.

Holla Holla. Right, so after the long and arduous interview process we whittled down the entrants to final gallant ten on Wednesday night. The list is below. We paired the teams off with actors this morning over in the Teachers’ Club, and they are currently out making their shorts. All we know is that one involves a robot, a big robot.

Rock N Roll : All the members of are studying for their MA in Film Production at UCD. Graham Connors is 26 and has directed numerous short films through this MA and other courses. He is a playwright, having staged plays in both Wexford and Dublin and looks forward to taking part in The Cannonball Run. Kerry Johnson is 22 and from New York. She has worked as Production Manager on two 35mm shoots while living in Dublin, after graduating with a Bachelors in Media Production in May 2008. Paul Conlon, is 23 from Carrickmacross in Co.Monaghan. He hopes to begin career as camera trainee, and has worked on various shorts and 35mm in college. He also hopes to one day act/produce/direct western in Monument Valley. Sam (21), from Cork, comes from a background in journalism, having worked as a Features Journalist and Page Designer on several East Cork regional papers. In the past two years he has moved towards film. He has a special interest in sound and editing, as well as a general interest in technology, and is looking to pursue a career in editing. Natalie Konyalian has a strong interest in post-production. Prior to moving to Dublin, she lived in New York and Cyprus for several years, working on a variety of media related projects.

————————————————————————————-

Red mercury is a substance of debatable existence purportedly used in the creation of nuclear bombs, as well as a variety of unrelated weapons systems. This term neatly sums up what the four members that make up Red Mercury are attempting to achieve with their filmmaking. Having struggled through thick and thin, the group of four strapping Dublin men has emerged victorious time and time again winning awards left, right, but mainly centre. Their first victory was 2nd place in the 2006 Fresh Film Festival with A Date with Destruction, a tale of love, lust and time travel. From here they moved their crosshairs to the world of 24 hour filmmaking, managing 2nd place in the 2006 Fast Forward Film Festival, a tale of love, lust and time travel once again. This did not satisfy the awesome quench of Red Mercury who returned the following year for both events, walking away with 1st place in each. The team took a year long hiatus, only casually appearing in the Irish underground short film industry, instead focusing on individual hobbies such as archery. Now Red Mercury have regrouped and recharged, ready once again to take on the delicious challenge mountain that is 24 hour filmmaking.

————————————————————————————-

Moshi Moshi: Sophie Kearney studied Fine Art in NCAD, specializing in Film and Photography whilst Katie Miller studied Film Production in Ballyfermot College. They met in Berlin in 2008 and took part in 48 Hour Film Festival Berlin. Their film ” Call Me” won the award for Best Actress. Currently Sophie is working as a freelance visual artist and preparing her first solo show in Ireland. Katie is working as an Art Department Trainee in Film and Television and writing her first feature film script. They continue to collaborate on film and photography projects together.

————————————————————————————-

A TEAM: Jeremy and Colm first encountered each other at Mrs. Lawless’ playschool, and from the moment their eyes met a grudging respect was born. This later blossomed into an iron clad friendship, hatred, restraining order, and friendship once more. Paul grew up in the wild untamed lands of West Cork. Some of his first memories are of melting his brothers’ toy soldiers in a realistic dramatisation of what it would be like to get blated by a flamethrower. Once a man, he learned English and travelled to Dublin to study the ancient art of FILM. Not much is known about Billy. He came striding out of the mists of Shankhill. Confident, mysterious - A walking hard in with a dictionary of one liners. When it comes to films – Billy cuts like a razor blade. It was during their time at IADT these four formed together to make some of the best short films the universe has ever seen. Success took its toll, and after graduation they went in different directions to pursue their filmmaking dreams. Paul became a labourer and shovelled cement for two years. Colm went into the wine trade (he works in an off licence) and Jeremy got a sweet taste of every minimum wage trade in the barrel. Luckily, the recession hit and they lost their jobs (except Colm), and through the mists of space and time they once again banded together, ready once more to dream-weave, to make some more of the best short films the universe has ever seen, again. Oh, and Jimi, he didn’t go to film school but he’s confident he can hold a Boom Pole, and we know he makes a mean sandwich…

————————————————————————————-

The Theme Team : We started working together about 2 years ago making short sketch films ,which then progressed into a low Budget buddy cop series based around two primary charcters twig and berries which was just a bit of laugh but turned out to be a bit of a hit on the internet, now together we a working on a screenplay for a sitcom and are looking for funding to produce a pilot.

————————————————————————————-

Jippy Tummy: Well where do we start? This crowd is pure sound. We’re a group of random acquaintances and friends with a shared ambition to tell stories in new ways. We want to endear people’s imagination. We see simple as effective. Full stop.
Jane Cassidy, Conor Hinfey and Shane McKenna are masters in music and media technologies, while Conor McBride and Darach McHugh are currently working in production and editing. Each person brings their specific passions and skills to the team. With a varied background in both music and media our differences combine to provide a powerful mix of creative forces. Together we offer more than your regular film crew and are the right people for the job. It’s easy!

UNFORTUNATELY JIPPY TUMMY PULLED OUT AT THE LAST MINUTE.

————————————————————————————-

Team G.L.T.F.A. has worked together making videos on and off for the past 6 years. Over the years it has seen different members come and go but the core has remained the same. This will be the first project undertaken by the current line up. Brian and James met in school and later met Paul and Niall in college. Paul met Nick in school. But it was more than education that brought these men together, it was fate… but mainly education. All members of Team G.L.T.F.A. have worked on projects outside of the group as well. Paul and Brian have made a number of shorts together and enjoyed some critical success. Niall has written numerous scripts and directed his own shorts and even his own funded feature film. James is a creative well who has helped with the writing and acting of many of sour projects over the years. Nick has produced, directed and written a number of shorts in England and has had requests for his work to be used in music videos.

————————————————————————————-

Dublin Ghost Tale: Ella Burke (Media artist) and Meabh Redmond (Video artist) are currently working together as part of the Dublin based collaboration DeySed who are producing film based works as responses to our city at night. CANNONBALLRUN would be the perfect opportunity to extend this interest in the city with a surreal take on what happens in Dublin. With the added skills of Niamh Redmond (multimedia designer and producer) and Elaine McCague (filmmaker) we hope to explore the idea of making a film in 24 hours by having a experimental and creative approach and trying to subvert the rules of that go along with art-house films.

————————————————————————————-

Pagoda Pictures is a Dublin based amateur filmmaking crew. Founded in 2005, we have produced award winning music videos and short films (Best Animated Short - Waterford Film Festival 2007, Best Music Promo – Hybrid Awards 2005) and thrive under the pressure of high speed guerilla filmmaking conditions: Pagoda emerged victorious from the inaugural 24hour FastForward Film Festival 2006 and took second prize in the same competition the following year. Pagoda Pictures also run a monthly film night, Pagoda Knights: where individual amateur filmmakers each screen a short film they have produced over the previous month. All are welcome and, despite humble beginnings, it is now becoming a serious monthly event for many people! The crew is constantly working on new projects and already has two short films lined up for the summer. The whole crew is very excited at the prospect of competing in the Cannonball Run.

————————————————————————————-

Studio 64: Team of like minded friends who met in the A.V. room in school. We have been doing projects together for many
years. Inspired by one of our numbers move to film academe we have come together to storm the very bastion
of independent and student film in Dublin that is the dctv cannonball run.

————————————————————————————-

Once they leave the edit room, we’ll be giving them the chance to have their material shown at 4 Dame Lane from 8pm on Sunday March 29th. Think about it, when you give ten groups of young film makers just 24 hours to launch into the making of a 3 minute short, you can expect some interesting turn out. Then, never mind the quality of tunes.

So it seems somewhere along the lines, a Gremlin got into the works of our site and gnawed it’s way through the back end of our contact form. It was an unusual Gremlin. Typically, a Gremlin is an English folkloric creature, commonly depicted as mischievous and mechanically oriented - this little shit had developed a fondness for poking under the hub of Word Press plug-ins.

But really, none of this every happened, right? You all imagined it.
